Donut King has quite possibly the best donuts in town. They are exceptionally soft and fresh. Often when you buy donuts from a chain, they have that almost hard or worn out feel to the dough. These are about perfect. We travel 25 minutes each way just to get a tasty Donut King original. Their old-style feel in the shop is quite cozy. From the cash register with the large pop-up numbers to the bar stool seating for the coffee crowd, it's a hit! The traffic here in the morning is non-stop. Do remember to bring cash. On Fridays and Saturdays they do their famous caramel rolls that are almost always gone before 7:30. If you're lucky enough to get one, you'll see why.

Best donuts in town. Probably the best donut I've ever had. I'm partial to the yeast donuts over the cake, but you can't go wrong here. I haven't had a bad bite yet. All the donuts are a buck a piece just about. Honey dipped (glazed donuts) is probably the most popular. It has a crisp lightly fried texture and nice and light in the middle. They've got an assortment of cream and jelly filled donuts which are terrific, but I'm just partial to the simpler ones like the humorously named "them" donuts (chocolate-frosted yeast donut). The angel donut is a favorite of my friend's- a powdered donut with a cream filling (he thinks it's mascarpone, but I think it's vanilla frosting). It's located in a shopping mall between a taqueria and a Burger King. Don't be intimidated, because you'll miss out on this gem. Make sure to bring cash, because they don't take cards or IOUs!

It's hard to find a truly good cake donut in Des Moines. Casey's donuts are overhyped and way too sweet while donut huts product always seem dry and taste funny. Donut hut just solved my problem. Their donuts are exactly what I want out of a cake donut; moist and flavorful without being overbearing my sweet. Plus I'm supporting a cool old local business. Double win.

Amazing donuts. Just picked up 3 - a frosted sprinkle, honey dew cake and a glazed twist. Each were soft and fresh and perfect. The inside of this place hasn't changed since it opened it seems like. Counter stools have chrome around them. The cash register was made sometime in the 1950s and they only accept cash. The parking lot was full and there was a group of older guys hanging out and chatting about life over coffee in the corner. The owner was sore pleasant and I think they enjoy being a classic Des Moines establishment. Here's to another 50 years of donuts and coffee!

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! These are the greatest donuts in the world. My ultimate guilty pleasure is the chocolate frosted roll that is approximately the size of your hand. Love the raspberry bismarks, love the pecan rolls, love the long johns. Just a plain ol' honey dip glazed donut is the bomb! Always fresh, always delicious. Cash only. Owners are nice, polite, and fast. Been going to this donut spot since it was Mister Donut and have been getting the same thing ever since the 70's. I hope it always stays right there. I wish they could get their retro neon fixed. I feel like it's on borrowed time due to owner retiring and next gen may not carry on with it. Hope that isn't the case. For now though, it's my FAVORITE place in the WORLD to get donuts.

It's a donut hut. It's pretty hard to screw up donuts, but very difficult to do them well. Donut King is a throwback to 50 years ago, and it looks like not much has changed. Don't go in here expecting hipster cupcakes and scones. Polite service was offered, but it was cash only, so take the green.

This place is old, needs updating, and they don't even accept credit cards, but... they have the most amazing donuts I have ever had in my life. No other company even touches them in flavor and quality. Just wow. One star deduction because it's a business for gosh sakes and I'd like to see them make it more convenient and nice for their customers. But again, you won't find a better donut, they are the Donut King for a reason.

LOVE Love love donut king! This place has been around since at least the 60's. My aunt actually worked here when she was a teenager! The staff is so nice and the donuts are oh so tasty. They are also so cheap! It's a really small place but nice to sit at the bar and get a coffee, chocolate milk, and a few donuts. Sounds like the perfect weekend breakfast! It's just so old school, I love it!

These are definitely the best fonts on the Westside! Fresh and soft...mmmm yum! Get there early for the best selection! If your taking donuts to your office this is the place I would stop!

On a weekday morning this little local joint is full of happy retirees playing cards and cracking jokes. The coffee is always on and the donuts are AMAZING. If you miss a small town feel, this is the place.

I don't know what the fuss is about this video. Donut King has been around for forever, and if you don't like paying cash for your donuts, you don't have to go there. It's his business, he can charge whatever he wants. We have never had problem with the owner. We always just go in and get what we need, pay my cash and go. Quick and easy. The most important thing is their donuts are delicious. Not soggy and overly sugary like krispy kreme's. Their donuts are fresh, well fried, perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness, and you can actually taste the dough. I don't mean you can taste the raw dough, but it's that taste that ensures you it's made with real homemade dough. We always stick with the glazed ones, because we just love them. I'm sorry, no disrespect to the guy with a video, but some customers are asses too. I'm sure people are wise enough to know a little clip of video doesn't always tell the whole story.
